John of John Novel by Douglas Stuart

John of John follows John-Calum "Cal" Macleod, a 22-year-old queer art graduate who is lured back to his childhood home on the remote, religiously conservative Isle of Harris under the false pretense that his grandmother is dying. Once there, Cal finds himself trapped in a battle of wills between his fiercely irreverent grandmother and his devout, uncompromising father, a Presbyterian deacon and traditional tweed weaver. As the seasons change, Cal must navigate the suffocating weight of family duty, religious isolation, and hidden truths in an aging community of just 26 people.
